At Southwold RFC we are particularly proud of our Youth and Mini’s section. We offer a variety of activities for anybody between the ages of 7 and 17. On a Sunday morning at 10am Southwold Common and the clubhouse become alive with literally hundreds of budding youngsters. The mornings training sessions take on various guises dependant upon age and are well supported by many parents, who can enjoy bacon butty’s and refreshments.
Anybody and everybody is welcome and our comprehensive team of experienced coaching staff are only to happy to chat to parents and welcome in new players.
To start with the youngest players will begin in a non-contact version on the sport know as ‘tag rugby’. In this variation the players each wear a tag on each side of there shorts which must be pulled free by the opposition, signalling a successful tackle. This sets the scene for learning some of the rules and generally having a fun packed day out. Download our Code of Conduct
As the age groups advance so the game becomes more physical and contact versions of rugby union are played. These progress in terms of complexity and similarity to the full senior game as the age groups continue into the U-17’s sharks team. This is the final stepping stone before entering the senior squad and youth players are eligible for full senior rugby at the age of 18.
Many of today’s first team players started out through the youths sections and have come on to be some of the top players in the area.
