BELOW IS THE 2008 REPORT 2008 marked the 7th year that Southwold have hosted the annual Beach 7’s Tournamnet played on the Beach at Southwold. The event brings in teams from far and wide to play in a 7’s format tournament, but not on grass, on mini-pitch’s on the beach! This years tournament proved another successful event with a great turn out and a lot of fun had by all. Coverage was provided by Radio Suffolk and most importantly a large bar is laid on by the club for all at night. The event begins on a Friday and Finishes with crawling out of tents Sunday after a combination of Rugby and re-hydration! This years event raised £9000 for the club to go towards completion of the long awaited NEW Pavillion, so many thanks to those who supported the event. The event will be hosted again next year at a similar time in July and details will be provided nearer the time via the website. We look forward to welcoming back the regulars and some new faces next year.

Williams, 67, showed his skills as the former Ipswich YMCA and Suffolk scrum half did a quick turn in a game of tag against Southwold RFC. “It’s great to see so many people enjoying themselves by playing tag on the beach,” Williams said. “We always say rugby is a game for all shapes and sizes, and this kind of competition is perfect for getting every one involved.” Local clubs were well represented with Southwold entering two men’s and two ladies’ teams, Diss Vixens entering the ladies’ competition and Beccles Rugby Club attending for the first time. From further afield there were teams from Manchester, Ripley Rhinos from Derbyshire and Beccehamian Ladies and Footscray in Kent all enjoying the warm summer sun. A group of pals formerly together at Brighton University showed hairy chests and fetching red dresses can go together when it’s in the name of playing rugby and having a laugh. At the end of a long day of tag the winners of the men’s tournament were North Walsham, who beat Aesculapians in a closely fought final while OA Saints defeated Southwold in the final of the ladies’ event. Around 500 players and spectators camped on the edge of Henham Park on Friday and Saturday where they enjoyed two evenings of entertainment supplied by NRG Disco and local band the X-Men. Support for the event was also provided by Samurai Sports. Dermot Chapman, one of the tournament organisers from Southwold RFC, said he was extremely pleased at the way the weekend had gone. “The event gets better and bigger each year and proceeds are put straight into the playing sections of the rugby club. “It takes a lot of organisation and is planned as early as February of the year, with support and help then coming from the committee members of the rugby club together with the players. “And the weather was our side which is always a winner.” (From the RFUtouchline online magazine) |
